Dr. Charles Coker

Today we are going to move from the concept of time to the reality of who “God” is. The Trinity is the GOD FAMILY. I think we can lose perspective when we use the family name. Most of us are so accustomed to using the family name that we forget it is a family. So today I want to venture there in hopes that it will lay a foundation for three different and unique relationships – with each one having purpose and intent like we discussed a few days back.

Each of you was brought up with a commitment to church, but each of you have diversions which distracted you from the hundreds of promises which are a part of your spiritual birthright. When you do not claim your birthright or its powerful promises, you effectively eliminate your ability to see with Kingdom clarity. It is like a soldier who goes into a night battle without his night vision goggles—you must feel your way along and use only those resources at your fingertips.

As you know God uses the most straightforward and simplistic approach possible, allowing His children to understand their purpose. Because of this truth, whenever we have a question, we should go back to the basics. To retain that simplicity, we must focus on what is most important to Christ. When asked the question, “Which is the most important commandment?” Jesus simply quoted part of what the Jews call the Shema (daily prayers) coming from Deuteronomy 6:4, 5. Jesus answered: “Hear, O Israel, the Lord our God, the Lord is one. Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.’” (Mark 12:29 – 30). Let us consider the key words:

  • Lord (Yahweh), a proper name meaning “the existing One”;
  • God (Elohim), a plural masculine name for gods, rulers, judges, or divine ones;
  • One (’echad), an adjective with many uses, all indicating singularity, likeness, togetherness, and unity;
  • Love (‘ahab), a verb meaning, “appetite for another’s intimate and caring friendship”;
  • Soul (nephesh), a feminine noun for the living substance of an individual’s mind, emotions, desires, appetites, and passions;
  • Mind (lebab), a masculine noun for the inner seat of man’s courage producing emotion, appetites, memory, knowledge, and understanding.

We can interpret those verses in this way: “Listen people, Yahweh, the existing, invisible divine rulers and judges, are in agreement. You should have a voracious appetite for an intimate friendship with each of these rulers, and that love should be driven by the passions with which you were born (regardless of whether you are male or female).” The same words and concepts are later repeated three more times in the Book of Deuteronomy. In each case, both Their plurality and respect are emphasized.

Your position, walk, and contentment are based on how close your relationship is with each trinity member. Since the “Existing Ones” are eternal, your relationships with each of Them is eternal. The relationship between the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit are perfect examples of consistency, harmony, and eternality. Their love and attention do not demand something in return, and do not exist on a finite timeline. Their single-mindedness and harmony is the reason They are called “One,” NOT because Elohyim is one individual.

The Trinity illustrates a perfect, enduring and intimate relationship. Therefore, we can use Their attachment to each other as the blueprint for our own relationships. By studying and considering the differences between each God Family Member’s position and responsibilities, we can gauge how closely we are to being on track with our life and place in the Kingdom. Every successful relationship requires an understanding of each person’s unique personality, purpose, and role. Without this, the individuals in the relationship cannot work together in harmony.

We will address those individual differences, their meanings and how that relates to us tomorrow. Once you grasp the enormity of your provisions and their benefits, you will have a security which fosters an attitude of success.

Love Dad
