My back was facing the ocean as I watched the couple walk toward me. Their eyes were bright and they both had nervous smiles on their faces. You could see the expectancy of what marriage would hold for both of them after experiencing disappointment with relationships in the past. Yet there was a spring in their step and for some reason I just knew God’s blessings awaited them. There was a peace about them both, despite the stress of everyday life that surrounded them. I knew they both loved you, God, and I knew that You loved them.
Joel had grown up several houses down the street from me. He became a student when he was about 14 years old. Even though he lived down the street, he became like a son to me because he talked openly with me and came to me whenever he was faced with a “challenge.” Over the years, he remained faithful to his martial arts training and we were able to talk through a number of those life challenges. Some of them were huge and I’m not sure I would have taken on some of the responsibilities he took on. Fortunately, God gave him a loving heart that remained steadfast as the remainder of his personality and presence matured around that heart. Today, he walks with God in a way I hope many in our mutual ministry will walk.
Spiritual children are a source of great love and added blessings the unbeliever will never experience. When I hear Paul refer to Timothy as his son (1 Timothy 1:18, 2 Timothy 2:1) it reminds me that Joel will be passing on what I taught him. The best part is that he will share it with others with the same fervor. When I read the 2 Timothy verses, I think of those who are now managing the ministry God gave me: You then, my son, be strong in the grace that is in Christ Jesus. And the things you have heard me say in the presence of many witnesses entrust to reliable men who will also be qualified to teach others. The heritage given to me by God will be carried on by Joel and others in our ministry. The reason they will carry it on is their love of God and the power of the message God has given them to share through their unique personality.
You are never too young or old to birth and love spiritual children. Whether God blesses you with biological children are not, you should look for opportunities to mentor and love those younger than you. Many have not come from a family like yours. Many have not had the privileges you have been blessed with. Many do not understand that God really does love them as much as He loves you. I know you may have never considered this in the past, but be available and pray. God will do the rest. You may not realize this, but God is grooming you for someone. The issue is not “do I have the capacity to help and minister to others?” but “Am I willing to be there for someone who needs what God has instilled in my heart?”
A commitment to others brings an unbelievable return on investment. Eternal riches. How much of that can you afford to squander for the price of a TV show or two?
