During my years as a professional speaker there came a day when I was booked on the same agenda in Washington D.C. with the Vice President of our country. This was extremely exciting for me because he espoused the same faith and principles of family that had become of prominent importance to me. Providentially, there were several months between the confirmation and the event. It helped take some of the edge off of my anxiety about presenting myself properly in that context. I felt blessed to be there that day, present myself without sticking my foot in my mouth, and walk away with a positive memory. That alone was enough for someone like me with the gift of gab!
When I first realized that part of being a Christian was developing a personal relationship with Christ, it left me a bit unnerved like I was before that event. Yet, how can you relate to Christ and know his voice (John 10:4, 27) without halaking with him? It’s just not possible! So, if you are going to walk with Him what is your role in the relationship? What is it about your family membership which can be the substance of conversations during your walks? I think all he wants is for you to acknowledge your understanding and acceptance of the steps he has taken in your behalf. Let’s look at just a couple.
Consider Jeremiah’s (18:1–6) example of the potter and the clay illustrating how Christ created us all. He took some clay (a fertile egg), placed it on the potter’s wheel (initiated the desire of your parents implanting it in your mother’s womb), and fashioned it (nurtured and matured it through your parent’s genetics and bodily functions) into you, appropriate for your time, space, and circumstances. All of this was done to ensure you were the living masterpiece The Father meant you to be. As it is with any act of love, once the masterpiece was created, He felt a sense of ownership and affection and a desire for you, the creation to prosper. The Creator would have no reason to leave His creation unattended. He loves, values, treasures, and nurtures His creation through the goodness of His heart.
However, Christ understands His creation, our human condition, and how our selfish nature rationalizes sin. Therefore we require an Intercessor who understands that nature, empathizes with our plight, and can provide the grace necessary to cover our failures, while continually loving and nurturing us. He realizes we are always one decision away from a path that leads us away from Deity into a downward spiral with the potential to rob us of the peace His work provides us. That is why Christ is positioned at the right hand of God to continually intercede for us (Hebrews 7:25). The love of His creation, His personal knowledge of your every fiber and thought, His heartfelt desire for you to prosper, and His dying commitment to ensure that you have the eternal rights of the Kingdom cause Him to be open to your needs every step of the way. He is a friend whose commitment is equaled only by The Father, who knew you before you were created. Knowing that He feels that way about you, is there anything you could not talk with Him about? Is there any need He will not understand or relate to? Still wondering what you can talk about when you halak with him?
Love, Dad
