Ask, Seek, Knock

If you were to look at today in history, it might be considered a significant day as some important things happened. In 962 Pope John XII crowned your ancestor Otto I, as the first Holy Roman Emperor in nearly 40 years. Much later in 1790 The U.S. Supreme Court convened for the first time and The National League (Major League Baseball) formed in 1876. Shortly thereafter in 1882 the Knights of Columbus were created and Grand Central station was opened in 1913. Though most of that seems like trivia, the reality is that the majority of those events have at least some impact on yours and many American’s lives today. So even though it is cold outside, people are still getting things done.

Now, if I were to say to you that God is busy every day that would probably not surprise you or turn on any light bulbs. However, if I tell you that for every day on the calendar God has given us six promises He is willing to fulfill if we are willing to take Him at his word, would you believe that? It’s true. Though not every single promise is applicable to you, the majority of over 2,000 promises are waiting for you to discover and claim in scripture. You know me well enough to know that I am NOT a “name-it-and-claim- it” type believer. Nor am I a “50% God and 50% me” person either. It is 100% me and 100% God or “it ain’t nothing at all.”

For the next few days we are going to break apart one of those promises which you have probably heard mentioned many times. It comes in Matthew 7 and Luke 9. I call it the “Ask, Seek, Knock principle.” I am simply using it as an example of how up-front and in-our-face God is. I want to make the point that often we don’t take Him or His promises seriously. Honestly, we take them for granted, ignore them, and in some cases simply refuse to believe what He says. In fact, I believe He is daring us to do what will cause us to be blessed. He wants to bless us because He loves us with the same love He has for His Son. We are simply jaded enough by this world to not take Him at His word.

All I want you to see today is a secret many people miss when they read God’s promises. There is an honest to goodness methodology or “madness” (if you will) to His approach. It always works, because He never asks you to do something He hasn’t already promised to fulfill. Here’s an example. Look at Christ’s pattern of prayer in Matthew 6 (The Lord’s prayer). In verse 11 He makes this statement: “Give us today our daily bread.” Yet in Psalms 111:5 it says: He provides food for those who fear him; he remembers his covenant forever. In other words, Christ is reinforcing a basic premise. God promised to feed those who love and diligently seek Him 1,000 years earlier (if not before) that Psalm was penned. He’s telling you to wake up and release the power available through prayer. In that way you can enjoy what He has already promised you could have. How much more plain could He make it?

If you don’t believe me listen to 2 Corinthians 1:19–20a: For Jesus Christ, the Son of God, does not waver between “Yes” and “No.” He is the one whom Silas, Timothy, and I preached to you, and as God’s ultimate “Yes,” he always does what he says. For all of God’s promises have been fulfilled in Christ with a resounding “Yes!” As a believer you are secure in Christ’s work to fulfill those promises. What are you waiting for?

Love, Dad
